Susannah stared out the windshield as Grey drove carefully up the narrow mountain road. There were sheer drops off to the right, straight down to the sea. She trusted him completely, to get them up the hill safely. When he got to the top, he drove a few miles, then stopped at a turnoff overlooking the entire expanse of sea and sky.

They sat there in silence, but the car was full of electricity. Susannah’s mind raced—with everything that had just happened, and the ticking clock that hung over them.

“There was a woman,” he said after a few minutes. “She wasn’t…we weren’t serious at all, but we saw each other casually for a couple of months.”

“After Maria, you mean?”

He nodded. “Yes. It was nice to have company, someone to have dinner with once in a while…”

“You don’t have to tell me,” Susannah said, shocked by how much she didn’t want to hear about Grey and another woman.

“Sari couldn’t deal with it,” he said. “I tried it both ways—being honest and open with her about the fact I was going out to dinner, then lying straight out, telling her I was going to a farm auction near Nîmes. Didn’t matter—she picked up on the truth, fell apart.”

“Fell apart?”

Grey nodded. “Yeah. Big time. Nightmares, crying, stopped eating. It scared the hell out of me.”

“Why is it so bad for her?”

“She’s so insecure,” he said. “It’s out of control. I know that. But she lost her mother in such a terrible way…”

“And she’s afraid she’ll lose you, too.”

Susannah reached for his hand, wanting to comfort him. She stared into his eyes, wondering if he felt the same despair she did, about their situation.

“I’m sitting here,” he said, stroking her hand, “never wanting to let you go…”

“I feel that way, too,” she said.

“It’s crazy, I know that,” he said. “You just got here. We just met. You’re supposed to go back to the States…and I can’t stand it.”

She stared into his face as he reached over, brushed the hair back from her eyes.

“I swear,” he said, “I think she’s just starting to make real progress—a lot of it thanks to you. But if you had seen what it was like—I don’t want to push her…don’t know what I can do…”

“Grey, I know. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wish there were some way,” she said.

“We’re going to drive home tonight,” he said, “and I’ll already be missing you. From the minute we start back, I’ll know it’s just a matter of time.”

“I can’t be apart from you,” she whispered.

He grabbed her, pulled her toward him, kissed her hard. They were desperate to be together, not even an inch of space between them; he held her on his lap, stroking her hair, holding her tightly. A cool breeze blew through the open window, making them shiver. She pressed closer against him, kissing his lips. When they stopped, they looked into each other’s eyes, as they had in the cave.

“Susannah,” he said, as she eased herself away, back into her seat.
